The Sign of a Good Vacay...

I am pecking this post out on my iPhone in the middle of Some-Small-Town, Alabama, as we make our way back to Home Sweet Texas after a fantastic vacay in the mountains of North Georgia. We spent quality time with extended family, enjoyed copious amounts of delicious Southern cooking, and experienced outdoor adventures--zip lining, kayaking, and white water rafting.  But I think the true sign of a great vacay is how many books you read, and in just 12 days of vacation, I have finished three books and am starting my 4th one! Here's a quick rundown:

Call Me By My Name by John Ed Bradley --This is the book that I posted about on FB because it made me burst into tears in the middle of Louisiana. It reminds me Remember the Titans. I insisted that Jason read this book, and he flew through it and thought it was excellent. (He got choked up, too, so it's not just me.) If you are a football fan, then add this one to your list!

All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner--I don't think I had this on my Summer Reading List, but when I saw it on Amazon, I pre-ordered it on my Kindle. Like magic, it appeared on the day it was released. (That, my friends, is the beauty of an e-reader). I devoured this book, finishing it in six days, which is like warp speed for me. This is a difficult but compulsively readable book. Jennifer Weiner does chick lit like nobody else (in my opinion). Fantastic summer read!

I Kill the Mockingbird by Paul Acampora--Since TKAM is my favorite book OF ALL TIME, this YA book was a must-read for me. It's a charming story of how some genius middle schoolers take their summer reading assignment to a whole new level. If you are a fan of Scout, Jem, Atticus, & Boo, then this is a book for you! You can finish it in a day.

The Right Thing by Amy Conner--I'm a sucker for the banner ads on Goodreads, so when I saw this cover of two little girls holding hands and the blurb mentioned Southern friendship, I was hooked. (It's also a debut novel, and I want to support the newbies because I hope to be a debut novelist some day! Fingers & toes crossed!) I just started this today, and the first page pulled me in when the main character secretly buries her twenty-fifth failed pregnancy test in her backyard. It's a mix of YaYa Sisterhood, The Help, with a dash of Flannery  O'Connor. We are about to drive through Jackson, Mississippi, and that's where the book begins. I love reading about the South as I drive through it.

I'd love to hear about the books that you've enjoyed so far this Summer. We've got about eight more hours until home, so I will pass the time with my book. I'm thankful that I don't get carsick while reading, otherwise, this would be a very long trip!

Now I know that I can read AND write blog posts in the car!
